Who else, when they heard about the war in Georgia, thought...."Bastards!! Just as the price of petrol was going down 🙁 " ??

I trhink they set a VERY dangerous precedent...given their subbornness about chechenya for example.

the precedent was set by the US. they invaded iraq without the consent of the un and now russia is doing the same. sure they have a reason. the us had one too.
in the years to come, the world will be carved up as the big dogs see fit. i doubt the us would go to war if georgia is invaded.
In this case we have a people (Osstes) who have living areas in two states: North Ossetia ion Russia and South Ossetia in Georgia. Nothing out of the normal.
BUT Russia who is sovreign over "half" of these people is supporting the OTHER half to fight for secession. IF Russia was serious about giving Ossets sovreignity they would FIRST let North Ossetia become a sovereign state.
An analogy would be if Spain would support French Basks to found their own Bask state...
Or if Turkey would support Iraqi Kurd to found their own Kurdistan...
And of course you are right: The big dogs will carve up and the small countries will have to unite (Like in the EU) or get colonialized...

Dangerous precedents aside, if the people want it so badly, and are willing to fight for it, I'm not willing to defend the government having such a harsh military crackdown on the people and the territory. As far as I'm concerned, in doing so, they've failed the people there, and don't deserve to keep the territory.
Originally posted by PonderableOh i get you now, basically they are hypocrites by supporting independence of a group in their own country, but not in their own; I suppose that make it a whole different story.

Saying that though, perhaps a certain amount of peace and security is called for in the region, before lengthly processes of succession on both sides, north and south are to happen; the threat is now.
Originally posted by Bad wolfI don't know the situation that well, but as I remember, russia was very reluctant to let georgia go in the first place. long history there, and they (the nationalists) see georgia as a sort of part of russia. -the south ossetia & abkhasia conflicts are old, and it seems to me putin is just using them as an excuse for invasion. the official line is that they're supporting the peace corps, but the thousands of dead in the first day speak of something completely different.
