It's probably a wrong address. Most likely this particular search page was put in your browser by another site, a program, or your ISP. Solution: use Mozilla Firefox, you only get a message: "Site could not be found". Very clean.

Try scanning your system for spyware and/or malware. I recommend Ad-Aware:

www.lavasoft.nu

Here is the TinyURL-version of the www.download.com page that the above-mentioned URL will eventually lead you to:

tinyurl.com/yu6cm

Install the free version and update the reference files before scanning.

If you use Adware, do you need spybot??

Regardless, I think this is going to clean up the problem!

Ad-Aware kicks Spybot's butt! I say this from personal experience. I once had Spybot installed on account of positive comments that I saw on the Internet.

While using Internet Explorer (another piece of software that I no longer use), I noticed that my home page was hijacked, and I suddenly had some toolbar on IE.

I scanned my computer with Spybot and it found nothing! This was obviously a false report. I removed Spybot and installed Ad-Aware, making sure to update it before scanning. Ad-Aware found a bunch of junk on my computer. After having Ad-Aware remove the junk, my IE was back to normal.

I now use Netscape as my browser and recommend it or Mozilla to all you IE users.

Do a search on the web for hosts file. It sounds to me like your host file had an entry to that site added by a website that you should have avoided. If that is not it your browser could have been hijacked or an "evil" BHO was installed. Spybot Search and Destroy can check all of that. Want a bit of advice? Use a browser other than IE or one of it's shells otherwise use IE if you must but disable ActiveX (better name is HacktivX) and learn from the web how to secure IE properly.

The problem with Netscape is that a lot of Java-scripts don't run on it.
