I'm afraid of needles 🙁 I had a fit when they did a blood test last year and punched the nurse.........sorry if you're out there.

I started donating when I was 18. A liter a year until I turned 23 and was diagnosed with cancer ... they didn't want my blood anymore. Now I am almost 41 and the cancer never returned and I think my blood could have saved some.

I glad it didn't return 🙂 I wish I had the courage to overcome the fear but I can't seem to.

I've taken it the bum so I am stricken off the list. Apologies to all that I could have saved.

I'm one of those big guys who almost faints when I give blood, or when the doctor requires it for testing.
I'm not scared of the needles, it's the fear of blood coming out of me.
So when it happens I don't look.

Yet, when I get cut I suck on the wound.

You can't realize how valuable it is. No one likes being stuck, but the pain is really pretty minor and short-lived (most headaches are worse and longer-lasting). Day in and day out the blood banks and hospitals struggle to fill the need only to get slammed with some local or national disaster (think Haiti).

Three things that work for me: at the start ask for an ice pack behind your neck, don't squeeze too hard or too often on the rubber grip thing-a-bobby in your hand, drink a ton of water before you go.

o neg or pos?

i've looked into this quite a bit in the past.. i'm o neg and only 7-8% of the population is that blood type, only one rarer is ab neg with 1-2%. but i can give my blood to anyone who is in the neg group but i can any receive blood from my own o neg group should i ever need it... basically it sucks to be me if i ever need a blood transfusion.

There's a new thread idea:

If you needed a transfusion, would you take GB's blood? Discuss.

pretty much the same boat as me but with the positives... you can give blood to any other positive blood type but only receive for your follow o pos. just googled it... according to wiki there's 37% of americans with your blood type. 6.6% with mine... i'll swap you a negative for a positive? :p
