Let's pretend you're at a company"Team Building" event. Namely, a competitive, suped up go cart race.

The question is, do you go for the win or put your boss into the wall?

Go for the win. If you've got unresolved issues and are dealing with antagonisms toward your boss, set them aside. Go for the win anyway.

You should probably just sabotage your boss's go-kart, so that xe crashes while you both win and don't take any blame.

Footnote: While it's true that company team building events intend to promote cooperation between departments as a productivity benefit,

the primary corporate purpose is 5-10 year bench depth planning. In a social setting with fun and games and competitive recreation, things

are relaxed. Most everybody's mask is off and their guards are down. It's an intentional format. Why? To allow the uninhibited whole person

to show up, in order to allow promising employees to reveal who and what they really are, what they're made of and what makes them tick.

Why do you think your V.P. of Human Resources was present? Simply to collaborate with the consultants putting on the show, who prepare

detailed profiles of each participant. Whole purpose is to assess character, well honed people skills, capacity for responsibility and promotion.

People are the biggest variable in any business. Biggest bucks don't go to specialists but to the broad guaged, resourceful and mature few

with the ability to read people and to harness their efforts to deliver to the bottom line. Question at the go cart race... Whom can we trust?

You can't trust anyone at a Go Cart race or otherwise. Your assessment of the "Team Building" event is undoubtably correct. However, go for the personal win isn't always the best tactic, nor, is letting the boss win.

I recommend putting the Boss into the wall and if you can take out the human resources director as a bonus, do so. This allows for the success of your associates, putting them in a contested, but, unconflicted position to win. Not to mention the admiration they'll have for your swift display of agressiveness.

Plato would argue that you'd served the greater good. Machivelli would value the seeds of fear, uncertainty and doubt you'd put into your Boss.

Later on you'd be well advised to liquor up the H R chick and shag her senseless.

Identify the person that will be the next one to replace your boss when the boss retires. Then help that person win the race. When that person becomes boss, he'll remember you.

Did they make you pull the cart again?

Think positive, at least you were the first past the finish line.

Appreciate your considered response. Free enterprise system principle is defined by winning in competitive moving target markets; by being

nimble and humble enough to constantly challenge any and all sacred cow but now outmoded premises; and by reinventing the corporation's

compelling reason for being and market mission. Need to take care of the short term to have a long term isn't enough. Today's executives

are facing into that. Identifying and grooming tomorrow's supervisors, managers and executives holds the leadership key to the longer term

market staying power of well capitalized enterprises with vision. First cut rejects are always the technically competent but emotionaly insecure.

I genuinely like my boss. I really do.

But I'd put his ass into the wall the first chance I got.

A) For making me attend a silly team building event, and...

B) For making me attend a silly team building event.

Then we'd laugh about it over a beer afterwards.

P.S. Machiavellian intimidation repertoire may have a place in tough negotiations with suppliers and subcontractors (maybe even with some

unreasonable government beauracrats) but has no place now or ever within an organization. It's a lightweight tactic. Cream rises on its own.
