So admired Serena Williams’ words of praise for Simona Halep after being beaten by her at the women’s final at Wimbledon
“Yea, she really played out of her mind, congratulations Simona. It was a little bit of a deer in the headlights moment for me ...”
Ever had a moment like that yourself?
I play a lot of over the board chess.
Recently I was playing in a league match for my club.
When my opponent sat down he could barely see over the board.
He was 11 years old.
I found out later he had been a chess prodigy, taught himself to play at 4 years old and had a high rating.
Anyway I knew none of this and played in a somewhat cavalier manner sacrificing pawns to get an attack going.
He easily rebuffed my attack and I realised we were heading into an endgame with me 2 pawns down. Of course by this time I knew I was not playing your average 11 year old.
I desperately tried to sacrifice a rook in an attempt to get stalemate but he saw my trap and ignored it.
My position was hopeless and I resigned. I extended a hand, mumbled well played ,and slunk off into the night steeped in shame.
