Published: NY Times - Monday, June 5, 1989

Junior Felix hit a two-run homer with one out in the 12th inning today as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied from a 10-run deficit for a 13-11 victory over Boston, extending their winning streak over at Fenway Park to 12 games.

Tom Lawless led off the 12th with a single off Dennis Lamp (0-1), the fifth Boston pitcher. Nelson Liriano sacrificed, and Felix, a rookie, followed with his fourth homer, a drive into the bleachers in right-center field. Felix had three hits and three runs batted in as the Blue Jays completed a sweep of a three-game series.

In the three games against Boston, Felix was 8 for 16 with 11 r.b.i.

Duane Ward (2-6), the fifth Toronto pitcher, pitched the final three innings for the victory.

The Red Sox tied the score at 11-11 against Tom Henke in the ninth when Nick Esasky walked, took second on Rich Gedman's sacrifice and scored on Jody Reed's single to right-center.

Ernie Whitt hit a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning to put the Blue Jays ahead, 11-10, rallying from a 10-0 deficit. The 10-run lead was the largest ever lost by the Red Sox.

The Boston starter, Mike Smithson, shut out the Blue Jays through six innings, but had to leave in the seventh with a foot blister. The Blue Jays scored two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth and five in the ninth.

Didn't they lose their last five games one year to blow the division to the Tigers?

Since my team was out of it, it was rooting for the Jays back then. I felt bad for them. I just felt a need to mention it.
