I was fortunate to see Clapton and Allman jamming one night in Macon, Ga where I grew up, at the now defunct Capricorn recording studio. It was poetry in motion.
Didn't sneak in a cassette recorder hmmmm?๐Ÿ˜‰

In hindsight I wish I did. You know hindsight is 20/20.

Wow, such hate. Rolling Stone doesn't make these lists to insult anyone. It's to award the individuals that have inspired all the other artists who contributed to this list. Plenty of great guitarists aren't on the list, but that sure as hell doesn't mean that they aren't great or that they aren't even better than some that are listed. I assumed everyone was smart enough to realize that... guess not.
Sure they do...controversy sells.
They should not compare apple to pears and if they do the person making the comparism should be an orchardist.
wasn't Rolling Stone that once said Robbie Williams was the most influential Pop Star ever... come on get real.
Hendrix was the greatest distorted electric guitar player.
But if the list is going to include country rock and blues players then maybe it should include classical..
Andres Segovia inspired more than most and in my opinion is a greater guitar player. Get the point.

i read about a guy a few years ago - a lot of people who could be considered authorities on the topic said he was as good at Hendrix - he had technique, speed, feel - everything. BUT: he was overweight, balding, looked more like an accountant than a rock star. no record company would back him, apparently. image was more important than the music...

You're blaming Rolling Stone for holding a FAIR vote between other rock artists? They aren't the ones who did the voting. And I already explained, the list realistically is NOT a list of the all-time greatest guitarists, but simply a list of all the guitar players who inspired the artists who did the voting. I can't find the RS mag I have with this article in it, so I can't give you a list of some of the voters, but not many classical musicians were on it, and anyone who was bothered by the fact that there were no classical guitarists or many blues guitarists on the actual list would just have to look at who the voters were, which is why the list of voters was there in the first place.

Good thoughts Kev.... It's all matter of opinion.... As for me, and ONLY me, Jimmy Page, Angus Young and Scott Gorham, (Thin Lizzy) tops list. (and strictly from a biased point of view, my son is up there too!! ) Ain't it great to be human and allowed an opinion?

More than laughable. Les Paul is 46th? Chet Atkins not mentioned???

Does the name Andre Segovia mean anything - no, not to Rolling Stone!

Philistines.

Cheers.

les paul is a legend-but he's remebered more for his hardware than for his music. and i can't remember who it was that said jimi wasn't original, but at least he hasn't been taken to court over his unoriginality (page...)

also-the reason i was looking at this list was cause "guitar world" did a list, but it had different catagories, such as "most underated" and "the guitarist whome you would most like to have a drink with." angus young won the second one, and i was intereste what the other results were. anyone got any ideas where i can find it online?...๐Ÿ˜›

and waw-i started a big thread! ๐Ÿ˜€
