Been thinking about joining a Gym,but don't do anything.
Interesting FAQs about pros and cons of subsribing or build your own in today's Sunday supplements.
Had not thought there would be a social side of joining a gym.
It is easy to join somewhere like here for the price of a drink's round, for cerebral workouts, but joining a gym can cost an arm and a leg.
They put social side of joining as a pro.It puts me off more than anything.
Are we not better buying our own equipment, than paying big money for what?

I pay 32 pound a month at the local authority gym near to where I work. It is all in membership to all the facilities in 3 different sports centres in the local area. On the social side, it depends on you - I personally go there do my thing and go home.

Different gyms have different styles, at least where I live. I belong to a modestly-priced gym ($270 per year) where people definitely go to exercise, not socialize. It's got all the basics: free weights, weight machines, treadmills, stair steppers, ellipticals, etc. Nothing fancy like swimming pools or fitness classes, but that suits me just fine. Since I don't have room for exercise equipment in my home, this gym has been a great find. But if all you can find is a place where they charge you lots of money for services you don't care about and/or won't use, and you've got the space at home, then you're probably better off just buying your own equipment.

advantages I have found to joining a gym:

met people (only a few because of the language thing, but otherwise it's be lots more)
I am more likely to train because I'm I am paying for it
help & advise on exersizes and using the equipment
advise on injuries
advise on training programs to achieve what I want

downside : they charge LOADS
