have I been blind, or is there a new feature?

I've just noticed the \3rd repetition\ button on the games screen? I'm perfectly happy to accept that I just never noticed it before, or is it new?
I know what it's for, but how does it work? I guess by scanning the game to see if 3 identical positions have occurred. Does it automatically end the game as a draw if successful?

I want to try it just to see what happens (many people's last words!)
