Poor guy eh?
Chess is so damn hard.
Chess isn't that hard anyone can learn to move the pieces learn openings, middle game, and end game. You can get books on all of it. I use to study a bit when I first got back into chess in 1993 and played in club tournaments. I worked my way to 1669 even won for most improved player one year....been all down hill since then....crap happens one gets older, things in life happen.
You really get out of chess what you want to put into it. I have more fun playing the game than studying it. I've started doing more tactic work now on here which helps, but make the same stupid mistakes. After all these years even got fools mated in 4 moves, by moving too quickly.
I've never played sonhouse but he does play players in the 1600 -1700 range and holds a good rating. I think he puts some work into it, you don't get to that level without doing so. I am assuming you've also put some work in your game calling an 1800 rating by the end of the year.
