no this actually has created more confusion, why should a character in a nineteen thirties children's comedy evolve into an internet forum idiom. what is it with the character that lends itself to this expression. If this is the case why are some using it with mildly derogatory sexual connotations as a kind of 'put down'? it doesn't make the slightest bit of sense to me. i wish i was more brainy so i could explain it 🙂
Spanky is a nick given to wise arses

What makes you think this? As far as I know it's got the same connotations either side of the border.

no we would never be allowed to say this in public nor in front of parents, its a total swear word as far as we are concerned. This is not the same in England where i have heard it even on local radio. You can get away with bum, but not arse, no way!

Where in Scotland? I've spent plenty of time there over the years and have never heard of this before.

perhaps its a case of manners, i dont know, but i was never allowed to say it, nor were my friends. Infact, i dont even think its commonly used at all.

when i was a student my flatemate was from Rugby in the Midlands, he used to say it all the time and to him it was almost like a normal everyday word.

You are talking to someone who uses the "F" word in every day talk.

I agree both words show no manners!

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that you're upset by swearing. I just don't see why you're posting this again, it's got nothing to do with the actual conversation.

Certainly it does, we were talking about the bad manners of saying certain words, or I should say someone else was. I merely agreed with him, and you jumped on my back like a little baby tiger. 😛 I give you answers you don't like and you cry!
