I'm going into high school next year, and I'm thinking about joining the chess team. For those of you that have been on your high school chess team, would you say that it was an enjoyable experience?

Absolutely. I played for my high school chess team my last two years of high school and I had a great time. Excellent personalities and great people. All different types. We would play our games in the teachers' lounge and there were ping-pong tables there, so we would play ping-pong, and sometimes the teachers left drinks in the refrigerator. I never took any, but I am curious if the teachers wondered where their drinks went. The interscholastic league was great fun, and so was states and nationals when we were fortunate enough to go in my senior year. We played in the unrated division (sad) but at least we finished 1st and 3rd respectively, but more importantly, we had a wonderful time.

Any size, as long as there is sufficient interest. Try starting a club, there may be interest - who knows? In competitions, the top four boards score.

Funnily enough, there was more interest in my high school chess team (school ~3200 students) than in my university chess team (school ~40000 students). This was due to how the chess clubs were organized and the enthusiasm and initiative of the participants of the chess clubs.

They started playing chess in high school in my last year there, they hadn't created a team before I left.
I could beat everyone there, they were terrible. 😞

Perhaps the level of interest in your high school team was skewed by the "free drinks" 🙂
