or just open a good english-french translation dictionnary and look at pencil
My copy of Webster's (an American dictionary) has kraan, where the first 'a' has a line over the top and the second has an umlaut (two dots over the top). I can't work out for sure if the two dictionaries are using the same system. Possibly not, as I can't even find the backwards 'a' thing in Webster's list of symbols.
