circa 1987
my wee bairns were 4 and 6
and all about the communal landscape, talk of santa was the rage
i was confused, and disheartened too
i wanted badly to tell them the truth
i was advised, in a sternly manner
to allow the deception, and keep my attitude canned
i still don't know the right thing to do
or say
at any given time of night or day
make up some stories about elves and sleighs
add in a grinch, and a scrooge, but not any gays
i was determined!
i would end the farce, and tell them the truth
my wife wept, my folks were pissed
i got stuck on santa's naughty list
in the end, and it will never end
the community won, and my knee did bend
Born 1944.
Was told Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy weren't real, before I went to kindergarten at age 4.
These days that would be considered child abuse.
My daughter figured it out for herself, about age 7, that the trail of Easter eggs leading down stairs and into the garden could not have been left by a rabbit who came in through the locked patio door, ergo, Daddy was the Easter Bunny. π
Young children believe in magic. It is a charmed life. Let them live it while they can, they will be disillusioned soon enough without you pushing them into it.
My daughters told me a few years ago. Sure, I was heartbroken, but also embarrassed. Turns out that I was supposed to buy them stuff myself all those years.

The thumbs down was being told there was no tooth fairy before you were even 4.

It was all done as part of a package about fairy tales and not-real people. Probably contributed to my total rejection of Sunday School fairy tales not much later. I've been a complete Skeptic all my life.

Like my approach...”oh ya...show me/prove it”.π

There's never been any Santa stuff in my household. I had my children 19 and 22 years ago. I don't think I have ever uttered the words "Santa" or "Santa Claus" to them. It's not on the TV either, so the matter never arose.
