How to take parts in tournaments and get rating...

I would be grateful if anyone could advice me on how a player gets ratings from FIDE. If i want to take part in tournaments so that i can establish nyself as a FIDE rated player what all do i need to do?
What are the tournaments i can take part in considering the fact that i have not played in any big tournaments before. What kind of sponsorship do i need. Whom should i Contact? Has contacts. You would probably best of starting at a local club - they should be able to point you in the right direction.
