What is "Labor Day"? Is it like our Bank Holidays, what does it commemorate?

I think it is lip service being paid to labor unions, but I have no solid basis for that. It's just a day off work/school.

Hurricane Frances kept me inside all weekend. I was in Tampa and the stupid storm knocked out the internet too! Then when I was flying back the friggin thing followed me.
