Last night i came to the uni library after work to play chess at RHP, among other things. I played until about 8:40pm, then hiked into town to catch the 9:10 out to the satellite town where i live. bus gets out there about 9:50, i walk home, get there 10:20pm. discover i don't have my keys. my former flatmate is now working across the other side of the continent. sh*t.

Decide to get a motel room for the night, since i'm carrying a big wad of cash - was planning to go out looking for a car today. nothing doing. no vacancies. the pubs are all shut, so i can't get a room there. small town, but a high hanky-panky index i suppose. no taxis around. i buy a pizza from Dominos, a sh&t franchise. contemplate what to do next. don't want to be on the streets with my wad.

Finally a taxi shows up. get a ride back into city - $30. would have been more but the driver turned off the meter at $30. plan: to go to an all night internet cafe and play chess until dawn. internet cafe is open. good. internet cafe owner says they're just closing up. bad. midnight.

walk over to uni. sense of deju vu. isn't this where i started? use my electronic card to get into my building. can't get into my office because that key was on the ring too. spend night in printer room. staring at wall. feel sick from crap pizza. 6.5 hours.

morning. people start to arrive. i pretend i've just arrived too, but no-one believes me because i've never shown up before 10am before. lady with master key lets me into office. my keys aren't there. start retracing my steps. uni bar. library. no keys. sh*t! since i'm here, may as well play a little chess at RHP. the circle is complete.

Sounds like he's still locked out. Everyone breaks into their own houses around here, you can't do that over there?

Well, before I quit smoking I was able to break in through a bathroom window that was unlocked, but I'm not that slender any more!😳🙄

i could but it would be more agravation than it's worth, since i have deliberately made my place hard to break into. never found the keys - had to get a spare set from the real estate agent and cut new ones. slept for 12 hours straight once i got in...

i don't mind Canberra these days - lots of bushland about, a couple of hours' drive from Sydney, the coast, the snowfields, it's less polluted than the big cities, and there is plenty to do, once you know where to look. the thing that sucks the most about it is that bands often give the place a miss, such as mogwai, who will be playing Sydney this weekend. i'd go, but there's a chess tournament on and i'm in the throes of buying a car...

l just have old horror memories of being stuck there for a few days with school.

Last time through there (up from Melbourne) was about 10 years ago, admittedly l was there early in the week so it was all pretty dead. Now l just skip it!

Cheers
