I have redesigned my church site (Yes I know, Christian based, but not what I am asking on). I am wanting feedback on it's layout,

http://www.beaconministriesonline.com

Easy to read? Navigation issues? etc.

It isn't fully completed, but I am getting it there.

very nice design with one minor suggestion. you might try some colors. the grey tones are tasteful and the text is easy to read, but what if you had some evening sunset theme color, or maybe a little earth tones?

Maybe the light beams could be a little more pronounced.

just thoughts. it's great as it is already.

I worked with colors on the original site. (yellows/whites/purples). The problem I was having was that the yellow fonts where hitting the white backgrounds were blending into each other, making it very difficult to read.

I could change the lettering up some to add color there, but the background I think should stay as is. At least for now.

If you have to keep the background, then chuck a DIV over it with a opaque image as background. That way you will still see the image, but will make the content easier to read.

No problems with the navigation, it's all pretty clear. The site is definitely missing a bit of colour though. It almost looks grayscale at the moment. Also, as all the text is the same colour, size and font nothing stands out on the page.

Apart from that, on the technical side:

- Not everyone has the same resolution as you. These days the general standard is to build sites so they fit into 1024 x 768 (without any horizontal scrolling).

- On your Location and Directions page, the La Quinta image is floating over the first line of the address.

- It's bad practice to have email addresses written as mailto links on your contact pacge. They're almost guaranteed to be picked up by spammers and bots so you'll drastically increase the amount of junk mail being sent to those addresses. You be better off using a contact form instead.

- Embedding videos as wmv files isn't too good either. It's easier to upload them to a video hosting site (like Youtube) and use their embed code. That way you get streaming flash and it cuts down on your bandwidth useage.

Thanks for the input. The only problem I have with youtube is size restrictions. My videos are quite large (even scaled down they can hit 1.5gb) The bit of good news is that I do have unlimited bandwith and web site space. So the issue of space really isn't one. If you have any other suggestions as to where I can upload large video files I am all for it.

I am looking at alternatives for adding color to it though. Possibly changing font colors to a slightly darker purple (yes the fonts are in purple, not gray) or even a different alternative.

Again, though, thanks for the input.

1.5GB video? 😲 That's either badly encoding or a good few hours long!

There are plenty of companies out there that offer video hosting services (I use mydeo.com for most of mine) but if with your hosting and bandwidth then it would probably be a waste of money. You might as well host them yourself.

Actually I quite the like colour scheme, question of tastes I suppose.

It's very clear and is understandable which is the main thing.

As stated the La Quinta image is floating over the first line of the address
on my system as well.

Yeah, if you want people to actually watch 'em you'll have to encode those quite a bit...

I like it, though I would agree with the part about having to scroll the screen, kind of awkward.. Good job.
