The 'static'. You need to hear the original song I guess to understand "I can hear you".

It's the point of the song, airplane telephones, drive-through speakers etc. Things we use to make life easier but you can't hear through them making life harder. I think the TMBG version was recorded on a Victrola... unless they are LIARS!
