As for some recent posts, maybe I'll chalk those down to communication misfires or jokes/putdowns that didn't go over as well as intended.
It is completely up to the Moderators discretion on rather to remove it or leave it depending on the circumstances and sometimes they leave it if is a back and forth between two posters, but will remove things that they believe go over the line.
We have all had posts removed, or removed them ourselves after reading it over. The remove feature which Russ added has saved some work for the Moderators as people will remove the post themselves after thinking about what they said. I am not sure how long the "Remove" feature stays up. You only have so long to remove it. or the "Remove" goes away.
