Hi, I really had it with that piece of crap of Vista, I restarted the laptop after installing the so called new updates, and all i got was a black screen, this is the 3rd time this happens, not to mention that some of my programs won't work with Vista, and every time I want to run an app it asks me like 3 times if I want to run it or not...I've gone to distrowatch and really can't decide, I tried Ubuntu before (couple years ago)and didn't work out for me.
I am an electrical engineer and need to use software like Autocad, Matlab, labview, Orcad Pspice, don't know if i'll be able to find the compatible programs in Linux, so far i found out Octave is the equivalent for Matlab (one down) but still not sure which distro to choose, I am sort of thinking of going KDE maybe PCLinuxOS or maybe Fedora (don't know if either of them would fit my needs), any help would be appreciated
thanks

Thread 120284

A thread about a similar problem i had. I had to reformat my Hardrives, and reinstall. That's the reason my hard drives were out of whack (i must've switched them trying to reformat i the bios)

Vista is beyond horrible. I've had no problems at all with Windows 7, though.

I had Ubuntu on a computer, which was OK.

if you can't survive with a windows, the odds are you're really gonna hate the x-world. maybe you should take a peek at the macworld instead?

I've had problems wi th my PC that were not vista related too, so i'm not so "anti-vista". My motherboard only works single channel now, as rwo of the dimms fried. I will upgrade with a pre-overclocked bundle in the new year.

try Linux Mint. it's easy to install and update.

the Synaptic package manager is on the start menu and you can install octave with that, over the internet. it's point and click (search for "octave", select, mark for install, click Apply).

here is Mint's own repository of other stuff you can install. octave is not on there so you'd need to use Synaptic to pull it from the Debian repositories.

i would back up your windows drive, add a blank hard drive, have linux mint install itself to the blank drive and have it install the grub boot manager to your windows drive.

you can try out mint without installing to the hard drive, too. same CD.

go with Mint 7 (Gloria) if Mint 8 is still in beta.
