You're a "hip hop musician" until you're shot ; then you're called a "rap musician" . If you're shot or shot at more than once , you're a rap "artist" .

hip hop is a form of music... like drum&bass, classical, pop.. etc
rap is a form of singing.. like mc'ing, opera, or any vocal noise!
