Interestingly, my brother got into Berkeley but not UCLA.

They may be fairly lenient about who gets in but they do NOT mess around once you're there. You better be ready to WORK and have a knack on top of that if you don't want to keep repeating classes.

so you've read Writing for Idiots. the passive voice exists for a reason. 'A college just rejected me' sounds unnatural. it's a negative event, well suited to the passive voice.
