Hello.
The Booker T & the MGs track the BBC used for the cricket was named 'Soul Limbo'.
'Mambo #5' was indeed the theme for the wonderful C4 coverage, and yes it was the Lou thingy cover they used, but of course it's originally a Perez 'Prez' Prado song, and I feel he deserves a mention.
I don't think TMS on R4LW ever had a theme tune.
I do like the University Challenge music, but I liked it more in its original synthy form, not the string quartet stuff they've done for the Paxman era.
And I think Paxman's a lousy host of it. Bamber Gascoigne was charming and witty and erudite - he gave the impression that he probably knew all the answers himself, but he certainly thought no less of the students when they didn't. Paxo, par contre, oozes arrogant contempt for the students, yet clearly is out of his depth - he can't even pronounce half the questions and answers, even when they're in English.
His brashness similarly ruined 'Start the Week' on R4, which had been wonderful under Melvyn Bragg, and has since regained some form with other presenters. And his book on politicians was no good.
Sorry, I don't know why this has turned into Paxman hate-mail. I've never met the guy, he probably doesn't deserve it. I'll go away now.
