MOSCOW, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Russia will implement the contract to supply Tor-M1 air defense systems to Iran in full, Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and First Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Baluyevsky said here on Wednesday.
Baluyevsky made the statement after his talks with James Johns, Supreme Commander of the United States and NATO forces in Europe.
"I'm sure this equipment is not strategic, but it is obvious that it will be delivered in accordance with Russia's international commitments in the nonproliferation sphere and under control by the appropriate bodies. I'm simply sure of it," Baluyevsky was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
Up to 30 Tor-M1 complexes are planned to be supplied to Tehran which will defend the key state and military facilities, foremost nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Bushehr, Tehran and in the east of the country.
The contract, worth 1.4 billion U.S. dollars, is the biggest arms deal Iran and Russia has ever concluded.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov officially confirmed the fact of concluding the contract on December 5, 2005.
Ivanov noted that the contract "is implemented in strictest conformity with the Russian legislation and Russia's international commitments."
Tor-M1 is an all-weather air defense system intended for fulfilling air defense tasks at the battalion unit level. It ensures effective protection from cruise missiles, guided bombs, warplanes, helicopters, and pilotless and remotely controlled attack aircraft. Enditem

is there such a thing?
how the hell does it work? (does it work?)
p.s. i just found this in wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor-M1
including
"Kill probabilities for later versions are quoted as:
0.92-0.95 against aircraft
0.80-0.96 against helicopters
0.60-0.90 against cruise missiles (with an effective range of around 5 km/3 miles)
0.70-0.90 against precision munitions (LGBs, glide bombs, etc.)
0.90 against UAVs "

The Russians have long been the best at making ground based AA weapons.
but it is not going to shoot down the high flying plane that launches the missiles, or drops the bombs.
each missile it launches will surely be more expensive, and in shorter supply than the cheap bombs dropped ...
though cheaper than a cruise ... it is only 60% reliable against cruise.
i think it will not be important unless it is surrounded by lots of other war machines.

should be interesting to say the least.

Does it just go off? What would be the consequences of this? Probably it would act as a massive EM pulse weapon on Iran's power grid.

Originally posted by AThousandYoungProbably not - after an ICBM has been launched you have 10 minutes or so to react. Iran isn't going to be able to detect one being launched from the US and on re-entry there's hardly any time to get it. These things have pretty high mach numbers so the defence missile has a problem keeping up. Trident gets up to 6000 m/s or about mach 20.

If you hit a ballistic missile then whether or not you get a nuclear detonation is going to depend on how much the impact messes up the warhead's implosion; getting these things to detonate isn't as simple as just bashing bits of sub-critical uranium together, they need to be confined for long enough for the chain reaction to get going (milli-seconds) and if the geometry of the weapon is altered by a collision then the critical geometry won't be sustained for long enough for the device to go off efficiently.
Originally posted by moweutYes, they have to do this because of the idiot running our country right now. The Bush administration - which has invaded Iraq, and threatens to take over Iran as well, MUST BE STOPPED.

Russians can sell all their cheap crap to whoever they want, the Americans are light years ahead of anything they come up with, have been for many decades. We prove that every time we go up against a country armed with russia's latest high tech half-a$$ed garbage.
Plus the Iranians will have trouble training their people to use it, if it requires a lot of technical skill. Remember the Russian supplied Iranian Air Force? Those migs were all useless after they started breaking down, no one could fix them.
