Once encountered a self-declared furry on RHP. He seemed to understand that it wasn't what normal people did. A bit like the gay thing 40 years ago. Never having heard of the furry thing I hadn't the faintest idea why he'd be ashamed of fancy dress.

My dad was friends with John Newmeyer, who has a sister named Julie and who changed her name to Julie Newmar.

I think that's two degrees of separation from Catwoman.
