I rook, because they just get to sit around and do nothing in the opening. And they are the piece most commonly present in endgames because they are hard to trade off. The only thing you can trade them for evenly is another rook, and that usually happens near the end of the game, if at all.

If you don't mind watching all the action from the side instead of participating, you would want to be a white king as they have greater life expectancy.
