I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth

/ ...[text shortened]... ay, "come dance with me"
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen
What ever happened to Janis Ian? I remember that depressing song from High School. Maybe she was emo #1.

:-) My point exactly -- young whippersnappers thinking they invented depressing agony.

My understanding is that she died, like of an OD or something.

Nice to meet someone else my age 😀

The furthest back I can trace the emo plague is John Keats, who died of odes.
