does anybody else out there find that sometimes they are 'in form' playing chess, and sometimes 'out of form' just like sportspeople? looking at my rating over time graph, it's like a mountain range (sadly the peaks are at about 1450. i find i have a run where i checkmate opponents fairly easily, then another run when i make mistake i can only wonder about in retrospect (such as now) has anyone else had this experience?

damn straight. There's times when I can beat 1600 players (occasionally), and at least give 1700ers a good game, but then there are times (like now) that I am losing 50% of my games to 1200ers. I just figh to stay above 1400. Some of it has to do with the time & energy I have for chess, but sometimes I just can't think well and others it's suddenly so obvious.

Yes I think it has a lot to do with your state of mind and the number of games you are playing.I tend to make mistakes towards the end of a session infront of the PC.I also think moving early in the morning has its advantages. But I still go through a week where I hardly ever see "won" next to my completed games. On other occasions I have to search for a loss. The mind boggles.

I often lose to 1200 and lower rated players but as often I beat players rated between 1300 and 1500.

Interesting point this,I wonder what the others think about this.

I think it has a lot to do with the type of position you get. Some positions you handle well, others you don't have a clue what to do.
And,of course,one has 'good' and 'bad' days😞

I think it has a lot to do with the run of games you are playing as well, sometimes I have a load of losses come a long in a row that just devistates my rating, this is not just down to poor form - these people would generally beat me on any day. Visa versa, some times I have like 15 wins on the bounce that puts me right up there.

I find if I am playing over 25 games I make a lot of mistakes as I rush through my games, this has a knock on effect in games I would normally win and it all goes pear shaped.

I know I am not the only player here who has just resinged a load of games to get back to a level where it is fun again.

The last few days I'm losing games to players with a 1200 rating (the just got started) but what's even more true is that they have an ELO of 2000πŸ˜•...I've dropped more than 70 points because of themπŸ˜•

Agreed! The number of games definitely has an impact on your performance.

Dont you think it has to do with the amount of time you spend on each move?...such as moving too quickly to get through your waiting games. I agree that a reason for bad performance is the number of games but i think that if you spend a good amount of time with each and every move then it wont matter as much

True, but that's just it!When you have a lot of games going, you don't spend as much time as you normally would.

This is a good observation. I'll go on 15-game win streaks, then come zooming down again. In fact, I've just bottomed out. I also find that I play my worst when I'm having a good chat, but the chat generally takes precedence anyway, so I still play these games.

I feel like why play, but my trigger happy finger shoots.
So I lose a lot more than I should.
I am on the wrong site. This is correspondance chess and I play from the hip.
No one joined my Great Escape clan.
