For those of you who have been inspired by Charlotte's Web, I recently came across the lyrics for one of my favorite songs from the movie. It is the song that Fern sings to Wilbur, and to me, it is a song of such pure friendship.

So, I offer this song to all those on RHP who are touched by the magic of friendship. May you and your friends help to lift one another to new heights of personal and global awareness, encouraging each other to be the best one can be!

Please feel free to share stories and thoughts about friendship in this thread. 🙂

*There Must be Something More *
There must be something more to us than you and me
It must be tangled up somehow with destiny
I used to think the sum of one and one was two
But we add up to more, me and you

When we are close together it's so plain to see
Together we are better than we used to be
I don't know how to say the things I'm thinking of
But there's something more I'm feeling must be love

great thread you've started sangeeta!
and say hi to 'fern' (since you know her) for me, when you get the chance 🙂

Hopefully, your thread will encourage us to see RHP as a place to find and be friends, rather than engage in the oppressive, demeaning and insulting behaviour that russ asked us not to bring here:

My contribution will be a striking scene from Lord of the Rings.

We are in the Council of Elrond and everyone is fighting with each other regarding what to do with the Ring. All are fearful of it and no one trusts each other any longer - such is the power of the Ring. Gandalf desperately tries to stop it:

Gandalf:
Do you not understand? While you bicker amongst yourselves, Sauron's power grows! None can escape it! You'll all be destroyed!

Through the reflection of the Ring, Frodo sees everyone arguing with each other and hears its ominous voice, speaking in the dark tongue of Mordor:

Ash nazg durbatuluk, Ash nazg gimbatul, Ash nazg thrakatuluk, Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul
[Translation: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."]

And in the midst of such hopelessness, the smallest of them all undertakes the largest task there can be:

Frodo:
I will take it! I will take it!
I will take the Ring to Mordor... Though - though I do not know the way.

His courage catches fire:

Gandalf:
I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins. As long as it is yours to bear.

Aragorn:
If by my life or death, I can protect you, I will.
[Gets up from his seat, and kneels beside Frodo.]
You have my sword.

Legolas:
And you have my bow.
[Also stands beside Frodo.]

Gimli:
And my axe.
[Stands beside Legolas.]

Boromir:
[Walks slowly towards Frodo.]
You carry the fates of us all, little one.
If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done.

And so formed this powerful bond that even the oppressive might and hatred of Sauron could not sever.

But it wasn't over:

Sam:
Here!
[Jumps up from behind some bushes he has been hiding behind, and runs up from behind them.]
Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me.

Elrond:
No, indeed, it is hardly possible to separate you from him, even when he is summoned to a secret Council, and you are not.

Merry:
Oi! We're coming too!
[Merry and Pippin leave the door, and half run towards Frodo.]
You'll have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us.

Pippin:
Anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission. Quest. Thing.

Merry:
Well that rules you out, Pip.

And Elrond sanctifies it:

Elrond:
Nine companions. So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring.

But Pippin concludes it:

Pippin:
Great. Where are we going?

Indeed an excellent question to ask ourselves!

Our journey through life is a lot like their journey. The Ring we bear, carries our bigotry, hate and fear but it is disguised even to us through its outward luster. We want to keep the Ring because it appears to give us power and satisfies our indulgent gratification for amusement even though it may hurt the beings around us and eventually destroy ourselves.

How many were able to resist the power of the Ring in the story?
How many are able to resist it in life?

What strength of friendship does it take to carry such an alluring and shiny trinket through the deadly perils of Mordor and cast it into the only fires which can destroy it?

In friendship,
prad

This is one of my favorite songs by the Beatles. I think it can be for friendship and for love.

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

"Friendship"

Such love I cannot analyse;
It does not rest in lips or eyes,
Neither in kisses nor caress.
Partly, I know, it’s gentleness
And understanding in one word
Or in brief letters. It’s preserved
By trust and by respect and awe.
These are the words I’m feeling for.
Two people, yes, two lasting friends.
The giving comes, the taking ends.
There is no measure for such things.
For this all Nature slows and sings.

The book by E. B. White is lovely:

"You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that".

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
Won't you please,
Won't you please?
Please won't you be my neighbor?
