I hate the computer guys. They love their "Network Administrator" title. Reminds me of my computer "teacher" from last year.

oh well we shall see how long it stays unsorted for, but thought that termination of a computer cloud was a way of saying "we dont have an effing clue what the problem is" but it sounds plausible

Being serious.

It could be anything, my first guess would be to see if an IP address was being allocated and then try pinging around.
It does sound as if a cable is hanging somewhere. In which case its either going to be hell or heaven to fix.
Without knowing your network structure it would be impossible to point a finger.
