Has anyone ever read this book or seen this movie?

What do you think?

Many people that I know LOVED the movie. I read the book and then, years later, saw the movie. I LOVED the book. I thought the movie was good and probably done just about as well as it possibly could have been done. However, I highly recommend reading the book first. I think Krakauer (sp?) does a better job of reading Chris Chandless' (name?) life and state of mind than can be interpreted solely in the way the movie was done.

Can't go wrong with either though.

It is an amazing movie that stays with you long after you've finished watching it. Almost without fail, every person I've discussed the film with felt the same way. It's haunting.
I have the book but have not read it....yet.

you're welcome. Also, it is an "easy read," so even if you want to see the movie, it shouldn't take that long for you to read if you are relatively familiar with the language the book is written in.

I read the book and listened to the audiobook. I really didn't like it. I ended up hating the kid for stupidly going into the woods unprepared. Also, so much of it focuses on interviews with others, and second-hand accounts of what might have happened. It seems like they had very little material to work with and desperately tried to stretch it out into a full-length novel. It might have been a fascinating story if you actually knew what was going though the kid's mind. Really though, I just wanted to strangle him (and the author) for wasting my time.

He was certainly fool hardy and probably a victim of the idealism of youth, but I think that was his choice. He knew the risks he was taking and chose them with a sober mind.

I can understand why he did it.
Maybe he was foolish to think he could survive...aren't we all foolish? None of us will survive our lives.

I don't want to give too much away, but based on your last comment, I'm convinced you will enjoy it thoroughly. 🙂

He was more than idealistic. He was seriously mentally ill. I did my share or stupid stuff at that age, but nothing even approaching that.

I think "PWNED" might have been a good title. Maybe with a picture of a frozen corpse on the cover.

I thought the movie (and Penn's directing) was mediocre at best.

But, hey, at least it was better than the TV movie adaptation of Krakauer's Into Thin Air (starring Peter Horton and Christopher McDonald), which was just absolutely atrocious.
