I just wanted to say that I feel that I've been getting drawn into argumentative posts here in the Forums. My attitude has become both defensive and aggressive and I don't like it.

I think we are all naturally good people here as we are here to enjoy Chess. Most Chess players I have met over the board have been very pleasant with the exception of only a few.

Does anyone else feel the same way? Am I alone here? What do you think is causing all of this bantering back and forth between good people? We all have different opinions but I think we are all mature enough to agree to disagree. The Freethinkers and the Apostles have gone back and forth more than a few times but I think I speak for the Apostles when I say that we really are not like this in reality.

The Forums have become a place to read arguments and lash out and I, personally want to stop feeding it. Things have been said under the guise of 'taunting' but I think they have caused hurt feelings.

I am going to make an effort to stop posting taunting/demeaning/ or just plain argumentative posts. I just thought I'd see if anyone else has anything to say about this phenomena here in the Forums.

I apologize to all those I've taken a whack at.

Sincerely,
Bryan a.k.a. ChessNut

You would say that though, wouldn't you 😠

Only kidding 😀
Actually, I thought some of the discussions of late (with the exception of one or two posters) have been very civil and entertaining or thoughtful.

I agree! I have tried not to respond or post anything like this. The only time I did do something a little aggressive is when someone, you all know who- but I won't mention his name, talked very rudely about The Fun Clan! I do not think this form of persuation is right!

One of the results of the taunting in the clan forum, in my opinion, is that it has channeled "flaming" into an acceptable form. Some of us remember when their were threads that were truly vindictive. What we have now is somewhat analogous to teenagers on the paintball range. Before we had internet drive by shootings. If anyone has questions about the motives of posters where there is taunting, ridiculing and the like, it is best to check it out directly in the inbox. This has happened several times with me and it has always turned out to be "neighborly fun." Kirk

I think many of us here are perfectly capable of having heated discussions without having them degrade into arguments full of demeaning remarks and nasty comments. When you have a group of people this large you're bound to run into those who are ideologically opposed to you in some fashion, it's inevitable, and it's what makes the world an interesting (if not occasionally frustrating) place to live. As long as we treat each other civilly and don't resort to puerile name calling or ridiculous ad hominem attacks on individuals I think a little healthy debate can be refreshing.

As for the argumentative posts in the clan forum, I think the tone of that forum is such that most people can see that the back and forth is in the spirit of good fun - you won't find many nasty of mean-spirited posts there.

I think there are several extremely thought-provoking and erudite arguments taking place at the moment, and that is worth a little flaming that might accompany it.

Mark, thank you for not mentioning the Apostles in any way in your post. I hope they (the freethingers) have forgiven you for even mentioning us. Kirk

I didn't feel it necessary. The T,G,&R was fun, but I think I am going to rise above it and continue my disquisition on moral obligations. See "Rights...".

i find that some posters only seek to demean the point you put across, its fine to cerrect some one but to descredite an entire post because they dont like the tone of your text, or it doesnt agree with there views, only goes to provoke retibution causing that person to start the argument they want. i too have been drawn in to the trap and strugal to get bakc to the debate.
there is a fine line between debate and argument.

I agree entirely - surely discourse is the driving force behind education. personally i think the forums have become far more interesting of late. There is a nice mixture of serious discussion and general and lighthearted banter

Hm...mmanuel, is it coincidental that they got interesting at a time when you started posting more actively? I think it must not be; rather, the addition of a Mark always makes the conversation better 😉.

My view is.Everyone should have their say.
Mostly people don't use their right to say what they think.
That is a pity.
The world will never change for the better if clever people keep their clever thoughts buried.
