Before that there were several real matches, that went on for hours and hours and were usually draws. The crowds got smaller and smaller, because who wants to watch a drawn match for several hours. So the promoters started rigging choreographed matches that were more exciting to watch. That saved the "sport."
Now it is more of a sports exhibition rather than a sports competition.
