I you don't know anything about cricket, this won't really mean anything to you.
Suffice to say, I rule!
I haven't played outdoor cricket in about 5 years, but I've been playing action cricket on and off for 3 years now. We decided to have a outdoor game (All the guys I play indoor with and some friends) because the AC league is over now for the December break.
Some guys didn't or couldn't pitch, so we had to play an abbreviated game of 20 overs 7 a side.
Here follows a quick report of the days' proceedings:
Sunday 12/12/2004. Game starts at 10:30 (because I forgot to bring the keeper gloves). Sunny and hot day, not a cloud in sight.
The opposing team won the toss and decided to have a bat. The cherry was swinging nicely on the day and we got 5 relatively quick wickets (including a beautiful in-swinger by me to dismiss the only left-hander - middel stump!), with only two players getting in double figures. 81 for 5 at the drinks break. We felt we were on top. The last two batsmen put up a damn good fight and the scoreboard was kept ticking over. Marius made 60 not out. Score after the 1st innings 161/5.
Pretty competitive.
Me and my buddy William went in to open our innings, knowing we couldn't lose early wickets. After I hit the second ball for 4 I felt in good nick, so I decided to play my 'normal' game (which involves a lot golf-like shots, looping up on their way to the boundary). I gave 2 chances but luckily everyone is out of form, so they went begging. After 10 overs we were on 99 without loss, so we decided to turn it up a notch and finish it quickly. It all went according to plan. Me and my opening partner finshed the game (with a beautiful square cut by me for 4) on 163/0 after 15 overs.
I had 80 not out which included 16 boundaries!
After a day in the sun I'm burned to a crisp and I'm stiff in places I didn't even know I had places, but it was so worth it!
I rule!
Originally posted by CrowleyI take it there were no Aussies in the opposing team, but well done on that 80 Werner.

Was the wicket turning at all? If so I am sure you were very relieved that justin Ontong wasnt playing.....
Waiting for a reply from dyl.....

It was a grassy, quick wicket with lots of uneven bounce. They probably only rolled it once the day before, so the quicker seam bowlers had a nice surface to bowl on.
Not that it bothered me, when I hit the ball, she went flying!

Congratulations. I've never played a competitive game of cricket in my life.
Wish I had but I'm too old to start now...🙁
PS. Were their bowlers ever a danger, or was it an easy slog for you?
We all play action cricket, so everyone can bowl (some more than others). Some of them are pretty decent bowlers, I just think they don't really know how to bowl outside anymore.
In AC you can bowl short and at the body, severely limiting the shots the batsmen can play, so probably more than half the balls I faced were short at leg stump. With only 7 guys fielding this was a turkey shoot...

Ha! My god Dylan, I'd like to face a few deliveries off you the way I was batting yesterday...
All jokes aside, the opposing team was made up of all english guys, so maybe my 80 is only worth about half of that.
Still, 40 isn't a bad knock. My best score in a proper game of cricket is a duck. I skilfully avoided the golden model by edging the first ball into my most prized possession.
Incidentally, Werner, everyone likes facing my leg spin. Batsmen salivate at the prospect.
Originally posted by dylI love facing spin, but strangely enough, the leg spinner was the guy who got the most dot balls on Sunday.

So, you trying to imitate fatty with your 'leg spin' Dylan? There must be lots of guys in oz eating cheeseburgers for breakfast and tossing tennis balls into the air, 'ripping' with leg spin.
