A DJ here (Gareth Cliff on 5FM) was going off about little kids entering beauty pageants, saying that they should be enjoying their childhood etc. and not going to beauty pageants.

I think if you have a beautiful child, by all means enter them in any contest / pageant, so that they can maybe become a model / actress.
In todays' society, being a celebrity is easy money and giving your child the opportunities from an early age is great parenting in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

Judging anything by its looks isn't very sensible. Beauty pageants exist only to further the gap between those that are not so beautiful.

I guess I wouldn't complain if my son/daughter had fame and fortune but I certainly wouldn't enter them in beauty pageants in the hopes that they might follow that as a career choice. how about giving them acting lessons or teaching them how to play an instrument instead? entering your child in a beauty pageant does not necessarily equal giving your child oppurtunities to be famous. it could end up being damaging to his/her self-image. And why am I saying 'his/her'? Are there any male beauty pageants?

Well said. Also, depends how hard the parents push the child. There was a show here in the US that my wife watched all about pageants, and most parents were pushing the kids very had with practice. I think it would be fine if the kid wants to do it... but I wouldn't depend on this to get you ahead in life. Education is far more important in my mind.

Sports, music, acting... I'd pick any of these over pageants. That is talent... not good looks and etiquette!

But you should at least give your child the chance...
Yeah some parents push their kids too hard and when the child then fails it could harm his/her self-esteem.

What about parents entering their kids into sport clubs?
Most kids would just sit at home watching TV, playing games etc. nowadays. If you don't push your kid enough, they might leave some talents unexplored.

When are parents pushing their kids too much?

I would say parents are pushing their kids too much if they are putting their kid through something for their own vindication or for their own glory.

but i wouldn't know because i'm not a parent...
