Has anybody ever had a dream wherein he was aware (?!) he was sleeping and dreaming the dream he was dreaming ?
There is a special name for such dreams. Does anybody know ?
Who had this peculiar experience ? ... did you like it ?
Very few of my dreams have a plot, or even recognizable people, though. They tend to involve large groups of weird things being juxtaposed, and ants show up frequently.
I usually do like this.
Afraid I don't know the name.

also, i find you can do a lot of things 'better' in the dream too.
mind you, it wasn't always like this. i remember one night many, many years ago at looneyversity i woke up from a nightmare shouting squareroot! squareroot!
you can often solve problems in these dreams, though i find it better to do so during a semi-awakening phase.
sometimes you can have dreams within dreams too which are also pretty neat.

I don't think I have nested dreams. What does happen to me is I get home from a vacation trip, and the next night or two I wake up in the dark and have to feel around with my hand to see if I am back in my own bed, or if I am still on the road in some hotel room. "Aha--that is my trusty alarm clock. This has got to be my bedroom."
I reckon 90% of the dreams I remember ends up with me dying in them. Mostly quite unsatisfactory and painful deaths too.
I wish I had erotic dreams. Oh yes...Me, Cameron Diaz and Drool Barrymore after WWIII and it is up to us make sure the human species is kept in existence...
Well...that's me then. I need the toilet. Again.
Originally posted by ivanhoeI occasionally get lucid dreaming. Usually it's when I'm having a bad dream and I think, 'Phew, this is just a dream,' and wake up, or if it's an OK one 'Well I know it's a dream, but I want to see how it ends.' The most lucid dream I've had went as follows: I was talking to a friend about how in the dream world, I was bursting with energy, talking quickly and running along a road without getting out of breath, but in the real world I was fast asleep in bed and couldn't even move because motor signals are suppressed during dreaming. I also remarked that the conversation was rather pointless as the friend was merely my imagining of him, and I could see that he didn't really look like the real person.

I still haven't got the hang of controlling dreams though. The best I've ever managed to get is 'I don't like this dream. Next!'
Talking of peculiar sleep-related experiences, has anyone woken up and found they're completely paralysed? I've had this once or twice: it happens because motor signals are suppressed while asleep, and you regain consciousness a few seconds before they get unsuppressed. It wasn't very pleasant, but since I knew what it was it wasn't particularly scary. However, I've seen 'paranormal' programmes on TV where people have attributed it to witches or evil spirits and have trouble sleeping because they're so afraid of it.

perhaps he was a prime candidate for analysis? π
so, colin, have you ever found yourself solving math problems in your dreams?
or do you just dream of the problems?
i've done mostly the latter, though once in a while the former has happened.
as i wrote above, i find the semi-awakening period to be the most effective time for some reason - may be, because we are most relaxed then, possibly?

I often dream that I've just come awake and I'm paralyzed. I'll scream (that soundless scream) and scream and no one will help me (or no one is around) and then I'll scare myself awake (in the dream). This happens over and over again until I wake up. It's no wonder that I don't like going to sleep.

i used to have dreams where i knew i was sleeping... i called them 'half sleeep' dreams (in german) and i used to hate them. i vividly remember this one where i was at school (in the dream) and suddenly i sort of.. woke up to the fact that i was sleeping.. lol... anyway, i was really scared at the time and started trying to wake up, only i couldn't. that was probably one of the worst nightmares i ever had, this sort of feeling of being stuck in this low ceilinged dingy school room - forever. *shudder*....
anyone make fun of me for this and i will personaly have them excecuted. π
