This whole issue would fit in nicely with the issues discussed in the "Morality and Freedom" thread on the debating forums. Freedom and responsabilty towards yourself, and how to teach the young ones (not the telly series 😀).
Well, this is news to me (her dad). You know it's really bad when I have to go to the internet to relate to my daughter or find out information about her. I doubt that this happened, but I imagine that there was some kind of incentive to sign it to get a certificate or a pizza coupon or something like that. She already knows that smoking is bad for you, but also knows that daddy's job security is enhanced by smoking. She comes home from camp today. We gonna talk. 😉

If it was a Health Education class, then I agree! 😀
Nobody who is in the slightest degree interested in their health would consider smoking. So, to get credits for this postulated class, and to prove that you understood the contents, it would make sense to have you sign a declaration that you would not smoke. If you are not prepared to sign, then you weren't listening. So you can't pass! QED.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with "the land of the free', only with logic.
Remora91, for pities sake don't let peer pressure force you into this filthy habit!!
:'(

This sounds a lot to me like "The Ring", where kids (in my opinion usually under a lot of pressure) sign their virginity to Christ until they are married. All very good on the surface but bloody useless in reality, which is why areas that support these schemes and where premarital sex is such a taboo subject that kids can ask for real advice have the highest teenage pregnancy and VD rates.
