What's the proper name for those lanterns that are like mini-hot air balloons? The ones that are home made, lit and released to fly away on a gentle mid-summer evening breeze.

I have never heard of or seen such lanterns, so I am afraid I don't know what they are called either. 🙁 Sounds nice, though.

I typed "Lantern release" into youtube and got a video of what I'm after, apparently called Kongming Lanterns / Sky Lanterns.

I believe they are sky lanterns.

Just went to YouTube, looks pretty cool when they are released
&feature=related

Says there they are also called Kongming lanterns 🙂
