Hot Rats is a timeless classic but Apostrophe is probably a better introduction to things Zappa-ish. "The price of meat has just gone up and your old lady has just gone down!"
Who you jivin' with that Cosmic debris should be required listening in some forum near here.

It's got all the "hits" like Valley girl, Montana and Joe's Garage on it.
Very funny, easy to listen to and it's a great starter for anyone!
Good idea. I've seen two different ones of these. Very cheap too - around 2.99 (damn, no pound sign on this keyboard).

I love the story in "Nanook Rubs It"... Especially when Franky starts wailing on his axe at the end. It nearly makes me cry.

Yeah, there's a few of these. The Best of Frank Zappa is the one that was released last year that I spoke about and there's also the Strictly Commercial albums... I think they're a compilation as well, although I'm not 100% certain.

Cheap Thrills is fantastic, although Son of Cheap Thrills is somewhat lacking.

Strictly Commercial is indeed a compilation and actually in my opinion not only one of the best introductions to Zappa you could ask for, but actually a pretty reasonable compilation for those of us who more adept. If only it had the live version of Bobby Brown Goes Down, found on Cheap Thrills, I would reccomend it above all others as a disc for all occasions.

Favourite Zappa tune for me is really really difficult, but I guess you have to go by what you generally find yourself lstening to more often than the others. For me it would probably end up being 'Be In My Video'.

If which one
album would you recommend to someone thinking of getting into Zappa.
Not necessarily the one you think is best, but maybe the one which is most representative (if that's possible), or most access ...[text shortened]... pped My Flesh.
I'd probably plump for Chunga's Revenge, though.
Hot Rats - I don't think a week passes where I don't play it at least once.

And the Baby Snakes DVD is probably a good intro too.

Indeed, Baby Snakes DVD is great, although I'd put it into Phase 2 due to Brucie-boy's animations and the gas-mask scene 🙂

Hmm I don't actually have that but I do have 200 Motels, Uncle Meat, Does Humor Belong in Music (sic) and Zappa's Universe on VHS - need to update to DVD methinks.

Nobody's mentioned One Size Fits All, by far his best album. Overall I think Zappa's music is pretty unlistenable though, and though it's sometimes riotously funny the humour is a little too far down the toilet.
All I listen to now is One Size Fits All, The Yellow Shark and Strictly Commercial (because Fine Girl is such a great moment). And I used to listen to a lot, until I realised my brain was melting. A few gems in a lot of drivel is my verdict, and yet he could have been so much more with his talent...

R.I.P. Zappa

Not only is the music great, but I reckon he also should be crowned for having the best album cover: Ship too late to save a drowning witch.

Such simplicity, black and white and beautiful.
