Has anyone else read this book? For those who don't know, it is basically a 'Soviet War and Peace', based around the battle of Stalingrad. Just wondered if anyone has read it? I'm nearing the end at the moment and i have to say, it is probably the best book i have ever read. Even better than War and Peace itself in fact!

I’m not always strong in spirit, Vitya – I can be weak too. I often think about suicide, but something holds me back – some weakness, or strength, or irrational hope.

I pray that it's better than Anna Kerenina.

Ahh, i knew there must be one person out there! What did you think of it? I felt it has the best opening chapter i've ever come across. It took me an hour to read it, even though it is only a couple of pages long. It gives true meaning to the word masterful! 🙂

Hehe, i had to read that at school. I thought it wasn't bad, for a school book that is (they never really choose brilliant books for school do they, no wonder so few children read these days..).

Glad somebody realizes why most kids don't read. Now if only we could read things like House of Leaves...(No spoilers, haven't finished)

That's the older grades. A 7th grade teacher I worked with kept giving her kids all these depressing books to read with suicide and sibling death and stuff.
