Today, I was driving home from the train station as I do most days. The short route home takes me up a steep, winding road. This road takes about four minutes driving at about 60 kilometers an hour to reach the top. It is a single lane road of the type you'd expect when going up a very large hill. Sometimes there are a few other cars making the journey with me.

Well, today, there were three cars in front of me and the lead car was driving rather slowly. As we rounded a bend to a very short straight stretch of road the two cars in front of me sped up to overtake the lead car, as did I.

By the time the two cars had overtaken the lead car and it was my turn, we were at the next bend. I pulled out to overtake and thought "This probably isn't a very sensible thing to do" as I could not see around the bend. Usually I would just do it anyway but today the sun was shining and I felt pretty chilled. I tapped the brakes and pulled back in behind the slow car. At that moment an enormous bus came hurtling around the corner on the other side of the road.

Now, there was absolutely no way that three vehicles could be side by side on that road. The closing speed speed would have been around 130 kph and none of us would have had time to react. The two possible outcomes I can see would be a head on collision at speed with a large bus or the slow car and possibly myself going off the road and plummeting a hundred or so meters to the ground.

It was very simple, unextraordinary day and an unextraordinary decision at the time, probably taken because the sun was on my back and I was feeling relaxed.

What simple decisions have you taken at a crossroads in your life when you didn't even know you were at one?

I wonder about how many times I left the house 10 minutes too late to earn 500 million dollars. Or how many times I decided not to to to the bar when Tyra Banks was there drunk and horny with her twin sister.

Probably caught a break there, considering Tyra Banks is a man.

I've been in a bar with all of the Spice Girls, What I discovered was that I was too crap to go and wow them with my charm and thus lead a life of luxury.

I once paid the local liquor store a visit to buy some juice for a party I would later attend. I first thought I'd just buy a sixpack, but ended up with a little of this and a little of that. I got really drunk that night. If I hadn't, something else might have happened.

Or so she told me three years later. 😕
