Hi. I just bought a new notebook PC. It was sold to me without any operating system. I will get Windows 7 within a week or two but until then I want to try some free stuff, like Linux. Unfortunately I am very confused with Linux home page. I don't understand nothing. What shall I download to be able to use it. I just need something I will be able to surf with. I don't want nothing too advanced. What version of Linux would be that ? Anyone can reccomend something. I am really a big greenhorn when it comes to Linux.

Ubuntu Linux is quite frequently installed on laptops/notebooks by manufacturers/ suppliers. I'm not sure why, but if manufacturers are doing it, maybe you should go with them. If Ubuntu is not for you then pick a version that is quite recent. I've tried a couple of dated versions and they tied my head in knots, even after doing a college course on Linux. A lot of navigating around the file system in CLI was involved. There seem to be a lot of problems with dependencies and hardware compatability issues with these older versions, which hopefully have been ironed out in more recent versions. Main thing is to check the OS' hardware compatibility list for your laptop components.

Thanks. I found your remarks quite helpful. I started to download Ubuntu, I hope it will work.

Agreed. Ubuntu is an ideal place to start and unless your notebook is sporting especially unusual hardware, it is likely to be supported out of the box.

The CD includes a live file system so you can even play with the system without making any changes to your notebook hard drive. 🙂

linuxmint.com

Peruse the Linux Mint screenshots.

Download the ISO for your machine (probably x64 since it's new).

Burn ISO to CD.

Boot with the CD, (first setting the BIOS to boot from CD, if necessary). (if the x64 doesn't work here, repeat with the x32 ISO).

Try it out.

i didn't much like ubuntu. haven't tried it again since going with linux mint.

linux mint is a derivative of ubuntu but more user friendly and better-looking, i think.

Arrgh... I installed ubuntu succesfully. Everything works fine except the fact that I can not switch on the wireless button and connect to my home wirelles. The fn plus f8 wireless comand just don't work. 🙁 I doubt Toshiba computers are even compactible with ubuntu. I got my notebook with absolutely no drivers or any software. And I can not find thing analogous to control panel in windows. It's a pity.

Have a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=570402 and see if that helps at all. 🙂

There's no GUI to install hardware? 😕 Why not?

Linux Mint has a control panel. i don't know about Ubuntu. maybe it is there and you don't see it.

if your wireless router is set up to use encryption you'll need to add the passphrase to the wireless profile on your linux laptop.

boot with a live Ubuntu or Mint CD first, then try to set up your wireless (write down the steps you use to get it to work), then when it's working do the hard drive install and then reinstall the wireless.

Surely creating a GUI for installing hardware isn't that hard?
