It's true...after the first season or so, most fans would have predicted at least the principal characters involved in the final showdown. At least the writers twisted the road a few times on the way to that showdown.

Not a bad way to go out, but I didn't think the finale did justice to what came before or the dedication of the fans who followed the show. As with Galactica, when I heard the creators say (paraphrasing) "In the end, it's a show about characters" during the 2 hour pre-finale show, I knew most of the loose ends weren't going to be wrapped up. Maybe the Galactica experience made this an easier blow to absorb, but I find myself simply disappointed this morning vs being angry and asking for 6 years of my life back as happened following BSG.

Believe '24' with Jack Bauer will similarly conclude this evening after eight seasons.

I remember Battlestar Galatica...and the ending was quite unfinished. They reache planet Earth,,,and the planet was in a chaotic enviroment>>.....it was a sad finale!

questions on LOST:

1-How did Jack got a son; that we never met on the previous 5 seasons.
2- Why Penelope was at the church. She never died in the show ?
3- Why did Ben never enter the church?
4- Vivcent (the dog) is the first being and last being he sees during the opening and ending of the show......Was Vincent was also part of the metaphor.

Yeah, I was disappointed at Galactica too, but I wasn't surprised. All big, story driven series end in one of two ways: Fantastical touchdown, or nostalgic parting of the ways. Both of which are a let down because at the end of the day, real life stories never end. Real people continue to deal with their lives, day in, day out. If you made a story that ended mid story, you wouldn't get away with it on film or TV because people have come to depend on segments of life for their entertainment. Imagine a story which reflected real life as accurately as, for example, The Wire does. Now end that half way through season 3 without any warning, or let it go on for 20 seasons, it would be awful. Everyone would die or get old and drift apart and soon you'd be looking at something that you'd rather go down the pub to talk to your mates about your own life than you would watch.

It's the curse of good entertainment. Make it real, but not too real. It has to end sometime.

Difference with Lost was that it was BS from the start and somehow the writers kept getting paid to make it up as they went along....

None of these series was planned to go on for that long. By continuously trying to stretch the story-line then you'll always have incongruences and inconsistencies. No ending, no matter how good it is, can possibly solve them. That's why so many endings end up in the "it's not real" solution.

LOST was totally real. That all happened.

I was left generally satisfied with the ending however the whole idea of the flash sideways world being some kind of metaphysical "meeting place" was a bit disappointing and perplexing. I'm a big sucker for alternate universe storylines (going back to my comic book days) but to simply wrap it up by saying "Oh, it's just a place where we can all meet before we head into the light" was silly, in my opinion. The fact that characters such as Desmond, Ben, Hurley, Penny who were "awakened" and in the final funeral scene had not even died left me scratching my head. The finale itself was fantastic up until those final minutes.

In the end, I'm just happy it's over and I can get on with my life. πŸ˜›

Your worthless opinion about Lost aside, The Wire is still the best show I have ever seen on television. Smartly written, tremendously performed, sufficiently gritty and as complete and enjoyable as a series can possibly be. Still my number one, especially after the underwhelming end to Lost.

Did you see the cast on Jimmy Kimmel after the finale? It was not necessarily a meeting place for all the of the folks who had died ON the island...so the cast members who had not died within the storyline of LOST could be found there. The island experience was apparently tied them together regardless of whether they died together. Penny is a very good example.

I thought the light tunnel thing was a little silly. I would have preferred they kept that a mystery instead of going there.

So all they had and all that mattered was each other? Is that the message?

(And no I didn't watch Kimmel afterwards)
