I'm looking for a device I can hang on the wall of my classroom that measures how loud the classroom is. Ideally it would give a result in big numbers that everyone could see or have a highly visible arm on a big dial. I'm having trouble finding it; the best I can find is used for "fine tuning stereo systems" at Radio Shack for $50.

Anyone know about this stuff?

Are you interested in making this with the kids?

It would be a lot cheaper to make than $50 and not that hard.

One of these:

And an old tv set (for the other bits) and you are away.

Oh and a bit of veroboard (stripboard).

I've made a few of these to power musical water pumps for a special needs school (I had to use large amps for that though), your use is not much different.

Edit: Tell me the make and model of your scrap tv and I will tell you what bits you need from it, when it comes to the output you have a number of options.

Yes.
Well, in that case you need one of those decibel meters like they monitor airline take-offs with.

Do they like get up in your grill and say stuff like "Excuse me! I don't think so."

Some do, sometimes. There's one girl who is so rebellious and angry...such a typical teenager stereotype.

I could see you starting a chess club at the school for people like her.
