It all depends on the level of "attachment" that is still there. If you do not want to revive the relationship, and yet still have feelings of *attachment* to him/her, then best to stay away until those feelings are no longer there. But if you've "moved on" in your feelings, and you are quite sure he or she has as well, then there is a potential for a friendship. Sometimes ex-lovers can make excellent friends.
Alas, once the relationship ends all too often we never see them again...
