What on earth is a half move and full move count?

The half-move count is the number of half-moves made since the last
capture or pawn move. If this reaches 50, the game is drawn. The full-
move count is the number of full moves made since the start of the
game. The full move counter increases by one after each move made
by black.

Although, of course, we have been meaning to rephrase "half-move"
since the very beginning to be something a little more meaningful.

A GM once said a half-move is moving a pawn only one field instead
of two ;-)

No. A half move is a move by either color....a full move is a move by both sides, it takes 50 of those for a game to be drawn without a pawn being moved or piece captured.

what lebowski said. A full move is a move by both sides. 50 of them for the draw rule, not 50 half moves, which is only 25 full moves. Look it up.

That is where you say want to move your Queen from d1 to d8,but you only move her up to d4 or half the distance.
