Anyone been there?

I am going for 10 days in July and am apprehensive about it.

Not many beaches, from what I can gather, but still looks quite beautiful.

It's an island, so I guess you have the whole ocean. 😉

Porto Santo is where you want to head to if you're looking for beaches. It's a small island a few kms off Madeira with large sandy beaches and very few people. Christopher Columbus married and lived there for a while.

Thanks,

I'll try to get over there for a day trip or two.

Otherwise I am sure there is plenty of other stuff to do

Madeira is quite beautiful but 10 days does seem a bit long.

If you like trekking, however, then there are plenty of nice "levadas" or hiking routes which might keep you busy and hungry for a nice "espetada" in the evening.

I hope you like it there.

you can swim in the ocean but you have to be careful for the currents! there's also no beach...just rocks, so be careful about those too!

it's not a rough flight, however, madeira has the shortest runway (?) in the world i believe. it's quite an experience actually! 🙂

It used to be like that, but some years ago they extended the runway by a full kilometer. They had to build a bridge because the previous runway ended into the sea. 🙂

It is. Just like Bordeaux is a wine.

Spent a month there in the 80's. Lovely, lovely place. Just make sure your plane has excellent brakes........
