Researchers plan to announce on Monday that they have created a silicon-based chip that can produce laser beams. The advance will make it possible to use laser light rather than wires to send data between chips, removing the most significant bottleneck in computer design.
I heard a discussion about this on the radio. The speaker said that this will allow speeds 1000 times faster than current data tranfer - that a full length movie could be downloaded in 2 seconds!

Seriously, thats interesting info for tech stock watchers. People who put lots of money on AMD should watch out.
Originally posted by arrakisI think we might need to upgrade our internet connections end to end to download movies at that speed. We might need to increase our storage throughput a bit too. I like it when a technology is announced and then an almost irrelevant example of what it might achieve is used to say how cool it is.

Well I've grabbed some of their stock on WallStreetPros.com. Let's see if it makes a profit for me. So far I'm operating at a bit of a loss.
