I did it once, many many years ago. I got a kick out of hearing guys whine about how they just CAN'T lose to a girl. I also gained a new appreciation for the hell women go through when harassed by idiotic men.

With regards to that... why care?
I think the subject of online identity and it's relative behaviour patterns is one of the most interesting internet related topics at the macro level. Here in our RHP microcosm it is still interesting and sometimes highly amusing, albeit somewhat trivial in contrast to the everyday. But getting contrast to the everyday is the main reason I come here.
If you play against someone you believe it's a woman/girl you might underestimate him.
(That's why is only fair for a male to have female name to use nicknames such as Cramling or Chiburdanidze, or something.)
Sometimes it happens that someone's mother-in-law secretly sneaks in hes son-in-law computer, and then makes a commotion.
If a nerd takes a dyke-alike name it may scare off the chauvinistic pigs...
But drewnogal had in mind - I am sure - false personation in order to lower opponents' guard. That stinks all right.
